Oyebamiji’s Tinubu Meeting Signals APC’s Next Move After Osun Defeat

The All Progressives Congress (APC) may be entering a new phase of post-election assessment in Osun State following a meeting between the party’s governorship candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, and President Bola Tinubu in Abuja.

Oyebamiji met with Tinubu at the Presidential Villa on Friday, days after losing the Osun governorship election to incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke. The meeting was his first known engagement with the President since the poll and came as the APC weighs its response to the election outcome.

Rather than immediately conceding defeat, Oyebamiji said the APC was still examining the election results before deciding on its next course of action. He indicated that the party would communicate its position after completing its review.

The APC candidate also used the opportunity to appeal for calm among his supporters and residents of Osun, stressing that political disagreements should not degenerate into violence.

His remarks come against the backdrop of reports of attacks involving some APC supporters in his hometown of Ikire. Oyebamiji said security agencies had been informed about the incident and urged Governor Adeleke to caution his supporters against actions that could further inflame tensions.

The election produced a significant setback for the APC, with Adeleke securing 511,067 votes against Oyebamiji’s 444,815. Adeleke won in 19 local government areas, while Oyebamiji carried 11.

The timing of Oyebamiji’s visit is also noteworthy. Adeleke had met Tinubu a day earlier after receiving his certificate of return, using the occasion to commend the President for what he described as allowing a free and fair election. Tinubu, in turn, urged the returning governor to demonstrate magnanimity and promote peace and unity in the state.

For the APC, Oyebamiji’s meeting with Tinubu therefore comes at a critical point. Beyond the immediate question of whether the party will accept the election result, attention is likely to turn to how it rebuilds its structure in Osun following the defeat.

For now, Oyebamiji has maintained a cautious position, asking supporters to remain peaceful while the party studies the results. His comments suggest that the APC’s next move in Osun could depend largely on the findings of that review.

Final Certified Election Results
* Ademola Adeleke (Accord Party): 511,067 votes 🏆 (Declared Winner)
* Bola Oyebamiji (All Progressives Congress – APC): 444,815 votes
* Najeem Salaam (Action Democratic Congress – ADC): 17,180 votes
* Total Valid Votes Cast: 985,079 votes [1, 2]
*

Key Local Government Area (LGA) Triumphs
The race concluded with Adeleke securing a constitutional spread by winning 19 out of the 30 LGAs across the state, while Oyebamiji claimed the remaining 11 LGAs:

*
* Ede South: Adeleke won his home base decisively with 26,188 votes compared to Oyebamiji’s 6,219.
* Irewole: Oyebamiji dominated his own home LGA, securing 29,972 votes over Adeleke’s 10,934.

*
* Overvoting Cancellations: Official results in areas like Boluwaduro, Ayedaade, and polling unit 006 were partially cancelled or adjusted due to localized overvoting.
* Violence: Armed thugs disrupted voting at Ward 04, Unit 13 in Ejigbo, resulting in scattered materials and a brief halt to the count before security intervention.
* Vote Trading: Independent watchdogs reported widespread instances of open cash-for-votes transactions across multiple rural polling stations.
*

Osun Election: Two APC Members Reportedly Killed in Fresh Political Attack

Tension has reportedly heightened in Osun State ahead of the governorship election following an alleged attack in which two members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) were killed.

The incident is said to have occurred amid growing political tensions in the state, with allegations of violence involving suspected political thugs.

The reported killings have raised fresh concerns about the safety of political supporters and voters ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

The APC has previously raised concerns over alleged attacks on its members in Osun, while rival political camps have traded accusations over political violence in the state.

The latest development comes as security concerns continue to dominate preparations for the election. Earlier incidents have included alleged attacks linked to political activities and an attack on an INEC Permanent Voter Card collection centre in Osun.

Details surrounding the latest incident, including the identities of the deceased and circumstances leading to their deaths, remain subject to confirmation.

The development is likely to intensify calls on security agencies and political parties to prevent further violence and ensure a peaceful conduct of the Osun governorship election.

Osun Election: Army Sets Boundaries for Troops, Warns Against Interference at Polling Units

The Nigerian Army has drawn a clear line around the role of its personnel in the Osun governorship election, directing troops deployed for election security to remain professional and avoid unnecessary presence at polling units.

The directive was issued by the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Auwalu Mahmuda, as troops prepare to support security operations during the Osun governorship election.

Mahmuda instructed personnel to stay away from polling units and only respond when their intervention becomes necessary.

The directive places emphasis on preventing the military’s security role from being mistaken for direct participation in the electoral process.

Army wants troops to remain neutral

The GOC’s warning comes against the backdrop of the sensitivity surrounding the deployment of security personnel during elections.

For voters and political parties, the conduct of security operatives can influence perceptions of whether an election is free, fair and credible.

By directing troops to avoid polling units unless their presence becomes necessary, the Army is seeking to maintain a distinction between providing security and interfering with voting activities.

The instruction also places responsibility on individual personnel to exercise restraint throughout the election period.

Security presence should not intimidate voters

One of the major challenges during elections is maintaining security without creating an atmosphere that discourages voters from participating.

A heavy or inappropriate security presence around voting centres can generate anxiety among voters and political actors, particularly in closely contested elections.

The Army’s latest directive therefore signals that troops are expected to provide security from an appropriate distance while allowing electoral officials and voters to carry out their responsibilities without unnecessary military involvement.

Troops told to respond when necessary

The directive does not mean that military personnel will have no role in the election security architecture.

Rather, troops supporting the operation are expected to intervene when there is a genuine security need.

This could include responding to serious threats, protecting critical infrastructure or supporting other security agencies when circumstances require military assistance.

The emphasis from the 2 Division command is that such intervention must remain within the limits of the troops’ assigned responsibilities.

Professional conduct becomes critical on election day

The conduct of security personnel will be closely watched as the Osun election approaches.

The Army has therefore placed professionalism, discipline and adherence to operational guidelines at the centre of its instructions to deployed personnel.

For troops, this means avoiding actions that could be interpreted as favouring a political party, candidate or group.

It also means exercising caution when dealing with voters, party agents, electoral officials and other stakeholders.

Why the directive matters for the Osun election

Osun elections have historically attracted intense political competition, making the conduct of security agencies an important part of the wider electoral environment.

The 2022 governorship election, for example, was closely contested between the major political parties, with the result eventually becoming the subject of legal challenges.

Against that background, the behaviour of security personnel in the 2026 contest could become just as important to public confidence as the performance of the electoral officials themselves.

The Army’s position is therefore not simply an operational instruction to its personnel. It is also an attempt to reassure the public that troops deployed for security will not become participants in the electoral contest.

The focus now shifts to implementation

The effectiveness of the directive will ultimately depend on how consistently it is followed on election day.

Political parties, observers and voters will be watching how security personnel conduct themselves at polling locations and across the state.

For the Nigerian Army, maintaining discipline while responding quickly to genuine security threats will be the central challenge.

As Osun prepares for the governorship election, the message from the military command is clear: troops have a security responsibility, but the voting process belongs to voters, electoral officials and other authorised participants.

How well that boundary is maintained could have a significant impact on public confidence in the conduct of the election.

Plateau 2027: PDP Completes Kefiano Ticket as Daniel Kim Choice Signals Fresh Campaign Strategy

The Peoples Democratic Party has completed its governorship ticket for the 2027 Plateau State election with the selection of Dr Daniel Kim Dung as running mate to its candidate, Chief Kefas Wungak Ropshik, popularly known as Kefiano.

The decision moves the Plateau PDP campaign into a new phase, with attention now shifting from the selection of candidates to how the party will build a competitive political coalition ahead of the election.

Kim’s emergence as deputy governorship candidate was announced in Jos, completing the ticket that will represent Kefiano and the PDP in the 2027 contest.

PDP ticket now faces the bigger task of coalition building

While the selection of a running mate is an important electoral milestone, the real test for the PDP will be whether the Kefiano-Kim ticket can unite party members and attract support beyond its immediate political base.

The Plateau political landscape is already competitive, with parties positioning themselves well ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

For the PDP, therefore, the choice of Kim is likely to be judged not only by his personal profile but also by what he brings to the ticket in terms of geographical reach, political relationships and voter appeal.

Who is Daniel Kim?

Dr Daniel Kim Dung is from Fan District in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

His selection gives Kefiano a running mate with roots in an important part of the state and adds another political figure to a ticket that will now have to convince voters across Plateau’s three senatorial zones.

The PDP’s decision also gives the campaign an opportunity to present the ticket as one capable of combining political leadership with a broader development agenda.

Kefiano says the ticket is ready for the 2027 contest

Kefiano has presented his ambition as a response to what he describes as the challenges confronting Plateau residents, including insecurity, economic difficulties and declining investment.

With the running mate now selected, his campaign can move towards communicating a more detailed policy programme rather than concentrating primarily on internal party processes.

The candidate has previously spoken about economic productivity, innovation and opportunities for young people and women as important elements of his political vision.

PDP must overcome its internal challenges

The completion of the ticket comes against a complicated backdrop for the Plateau PDP.

Earlier in 2026, reports emerged that different factions of the party had produced separate governorship candidates for the 2027 election, highlighting the internal disagreements confronting the organisation.

That history makes party unity one of the immediate challenges facing the Kefiano-Kim campaign.

A strong ticket alone may not be sufficient if disagreements within the party persist. The PDP will need to consolidate its structures, reconcile competing interests and ensure that its members work behind the candidate before the election campaign reaches its peak.

The race is becoming more competitive

Kefiano’s emergence has already placed the PDP in the early political contest for Plateau Government House.

Other political parties are also expected to use the period before the election to build their own structures and identify candidates capable of challenging the ruling political establishment.

This means the PDP’s next challenge will be converting the announcement of its running mate into an effective statewide campaign organisation.

What the Kefiano-Kim ticket must prove

The completion of the ticket provides clarity for PDP supporters, but it also raises expectations.

The pair will have to demonstrate that their partnership can offer voters a convincing alternative on issues such as security, jobs, infrastructure, education, healthcare and economic development.

They will also need to convince undecided voters that their campaign can translate its promises into practical governance.

For the PDP, the selection of Daniel Kim therefore represents more than the final piece of its governorship ticket.

It marks the beginning of the more difficult stage of the 2027 Plateau election — turning a candidate-and-running-mate combination into a broad political coalition capable of competing across the state.

With the ticket now complete, the spotlight shifts to the PDP’s ability to maintain unity, expand its support base and persuade Plateau voters that Kefiano and Kim represent the change the party is promising.

Hunter Biden has revealed new details about his father Joe Biden’s ongoing battle with prostate cancer, saying the former US president is experiencing significant pain after the disease spread to his bones.

Hunter made the disclosure during an emotional interview with the BBC, where he spoke about the difficulty of watching his father deal with an advanced illness.

The revelation provides one of the clearest recent accounts of Joe Biden’s condition from a member of his immediate family.

Hunter Biden describes his father’s condition

Speaking about the former president’s health, Hunter Biden said the cancer had metastasised to his father’s bones and beyond.

He described the illness as painful and debilitating, while expressing sadness over watching his father deal with the effects of the disease.

Despite the physical challenges, Hunter portrayed the 83-year-old former president as remarkably resilient and said Biden continues to remain engaged with public life.

The comments have renewed attention on the former president’s health more than a year after his cancer diagnosis was first made public.

Joe Biden was diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer

Biden’s office announced in May 2025 that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

At the time, his office said the cancer had already spread to his bones, placing the disease at an advanced stage.

Biden subsequently underwent treatment, including radiation and hormone therapy, with updates from his representatives indicating that he remained under medical care.

The latest comments from Hunter, however, have drawn renewed attention because of his description of the pain and debilitating effects associated with his father’s condition.

Family remains central to Biden’s cancer journey

Hunter’s comments also highlight the personal dimension of the former president’s illness.

The Biden family has previously faced the devastating loss of Joe Biden’s son Beau, who died from brain cancer in 2015.

Hunter said watching his father struggle with cancer has been difficult, while also expressing admiration for Biden’s determination.

The former president has continued to make occasional public appearances and speak on political issues despite his health challenges.

What the latest disclosure means

Hunter Biden’s disclosure does not represent a new cancer diagnosis. Rather, it provides an updated account of the existing prostate cancer and its impact on the former president.

The fact that the disease has spread to the bones is consistent with information previously released when Biden’s diagnosis was announced in 2025.

Medical experts generally describe metastatic prostate cancer as a serious condition requiring ongoing management, although individual outcomes vary considerably depending on factors such as treatment response and the characteristics of the cancer.

Biden continues life after the White House

Joe Biden left the White House in January 2025 after serving as the 46th president of the United States.

Since his diagnosis, his health has remained a subject of public interest, particularly because of his age and the demanding nature of his former political career.

Despite his illness, Biden has continued to appear publicly from time to time and has remained involved in political and personal projects.

Hunter’s latest remarks now offer a more personal glimpse into what the former president and his family are experiencing away from the public spotlight.

For the Biden family, the focus remains on managing an advanced illness while allowing the former president to maintain as much of his normal life as possible.

The man who once lit up our screens in Nollywood blockbusters now delivers plot twists worthy of a blockbuster sequel in Nigeria’s chaotic political theatre. One day he’s the fiery defender of a new Nigeria, the next he’s flipping allegiances faster than a market trader dodging rain. If hypocrisy had a face, it might just be wearing Okonkwo’s trademark intensity. And right now, that face is everywhere- praising Atiku Abubakar while savaging Peter Obi, the very man he once hailed as the messiah of competence.

Let’s rewind the tape. Not too long ago, Okonkwo was Peter Obi’s vocal spokesperson during the 2023 presidential campaign under the Labour Party. He spoke with passion about Obi’s vision, his integrity, and the need for a Southeast presidency after decades of marginalization. He threw himself into the fray, defending the “Obidient” movement with the zeal of a true believer. Nigerians listened. Many were inspired. But fast-forward to 2026, and the script has flipped dramatically. Okonkwo now accuses Obi of betrayal, indecisiveness, and even worse- alleging bribe-taking and shady dealings that have landed him in hot water with a hefty N5 billion defamation suit from his former principal.

“I stopped speaking for him because he lacks the decisiveness to lead,” Okonkwo declared on national television. He wanted Obi to “fight ferociously” for the mandate, to sacrifice more amid the post-election turmoil. Fair critique? Perhaps, if it came from a consistent voice. But coming from a man who has danced across party lines, it reeks of convenience. Obi, ever the calm operator, has challenged Okonkwo to spill all his “secrets” in court, even vowing to quit the 2027 race if proven unfit. The ball is in Okonkwo’s court, yet the drama continues.

Now, enter Atiku Abubakar, the man Okonkwo once roasted mercilessly. Throwback clips show Okonkwo eviscerating the former Vice President: accusing him of corruption, disloyalty, a “propensity for coded corruption,” and sacrificing national interest for personal gain. He painted Atiku as the embodiment of the old, tainted order. Yet here we are in 2026, with Okonkwo freshly appointed as Atiku’s spokesperson for the ADC’s 2027 push. Suddenly, Atiku is a “talent discoverer,” a man of vision who saw value in Okonkwo despite past barbs. “He looked beyond my criticisms,” Okonkwo gushes, contrasting Atiku’s magnanimity with Obi’s alleged betrayal.

Talk about selective amnesia! Atiku, to his credit, seems a pragmatic and vocal operator who brings media flair and Southeast outreach. But for observers, it’s a textbook case of political opportunism. Okonkwo himself has admitted using anti-Atiku rhetoric because “it was profitable” at the time. Now, the calculus has shifted. South-East marginalization remains his rallying cry- he even briefly withdrew support over Atiku’s VP choice- but the alliance holds, at least for now.

This double-faced dance isn’t new for Okonkwo. His political CV reads like a revolving door: dumping PDP, joining APC in 2018 (after criticizing Atiku), pushing for Southeast interests within Buhari’s party, then jumping to Labour with Obi, and now ADC. Each switch comes packaged with righteous indignation, as if this time it’s different, this time it’s pure. He blasts the Tinubu presidency and APC with gusto- labeling it a “government of catastrophe,” decrying insecurity, economic hardship, fuel prices, and leadership incapacity. “Tinubu is gone” if the opposition unites, he thunders. Harsh words from someone who once aligned with the party.

One can’t help but chuckle at the consistency of inconsistency. In a country starving for principled leadership, Okonkwo embodies the very cynicism many decry: politics as performance, loyalty as transaction, principles as props. His Nollywood background serves him well- delivering lines with conviction, switching roles seamlessly. But voters aren’t an audience buying tickets; they’re living the consequences of these flip-flops.

Critics from the South-East Revival Group and others rightly question which Okonkwo to believe: the passionate Obi endorser or the fierce detractor? The Atiku-basher or the loyal spokesman? Both can’t be true, they argue. Exactly. This chameleon act erodes trust in the political class. It fuels apathy among the youth who once saw Obi as a break from the script.

As 2027 looms, Nigerians deserve better than actors playing multiple parts. We need leaders with spines, not weather vanes. Kenneth Okonkwo’s saga is entertaining, no doubt- a real-life drama of ambition, grudges, and reversals. But it’s also a cautionary tale: in the end, the chameleon might change colours, but the tree it clings to remains the same old political forest. Will Nigerians fall for the latest act? Or demand a new script altogether?

AN independent report tagged ‘2026 Social Cohesion Report’ released at the weekend by the Africa Polling Institute, API, an independent, non-profit, and non-partisan opinion research think-tank, indicated that the National Assembly emerged the least trusted institution of government with 77% of Nigerians having no trust, as it overtakes the Nigerian Police Force.

According to the Executive Director, API, Prof Bell Ihua, who formally unveiled the report at a National Social Cohesion Dialogue in Abuja, computed Nigeria’s Social Cohesion Index (NSCI) at 48.8%. This index represents a 2-percentage-point increase from last year’s, and the highest index recorded since the study commenced. Although the index remains marginally below the average 50 per cent threshold. This upward trend suggests that Nigerians continue to demonstrate resilience and a commitment to coexistence despite prevailing hardships.

Prof Ihua also said the survey findings indicate persistent trust among citizens in religious and traditional leaders, and very little trust in the government and public institutions. Specifically, 51% and 45% of Nigerians expressed significant trust in religious and traditional leaders, respectively, compared with only 28% who trust the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and 23% who trust the National Assembly.

According to him, API, with support from the Ford Foundation, conducted the national citizen survey to measure the state of social cohesion in Nigeria between January and February 2025, which a total of 5,315 interviews were conducted via Face-to-face Household visits using the Stratified Random Sampling technique with citizens aged 15 years and above. The interviews were conducted in five major languages: English, Pidgin, Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba, and geographic quotas were assigned to ensure that all States and senatorial districts were proportionately represented in the sample.

He also explained that the concept of social cohesion refers to the willingness of a country’s citizens to cooperate and work together to ensure the country’s survival and prosperity, despite tribal, religious, social, or political differences.

He said drawing from the literature, and building upon the 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2025 rounds of surveys, 14 indicators were instrumentalised to measure social cohesion in Nigeria – Identity; Trust; Social Justice & Equity; Civic Participation; Tolerance; Gender Equity; Disability & Inclusion, Impunity; Corruption; Natural Resource Governance; Polarization; Security & Peacebuilding; Coping Strategies; Migration; and Self-worth and Future Expectations.

He said: “This assessment places the National Assembly as the least trusted institution in the country, a position previously held by the Police, with 24% trust in the current survey.”

Meanwhile, the report reads in part, “Identity’ Indicator; The survey revealed that 46% of Nigerians “feel truly proud of Nigeria”, compared to 41% who feel really disappointed in the country; while 11% feel indifferent. Also, 44% of Nigerians are proud of being equally identified as Nigerian and from their ethnic group; while 29% identify more with their ethnicity than with being Nigerian, compared to only 11% feel more Nigerian than ethnic.

https://syndicatedsearch.goog/afs/ads?sjk=Jqv17yAyRW2R0hd3RM%2Fd6Q%3D%3D&psid=5134551505&channel=AutoRsVariant&cx=r-82a37fc321e8f11e0&fexp=31099346%2C95390277%2C31061691%2C31061693%2C21404%2C17300002%2C17301431%2C17301432%2C17301436%2C17301266%2C72717107&client=pub-7532470883667401&r=m&sct=ID%3D980f78e40985d219%3AT%3D1782124425%3ART%3D1782124425%3AS%3DALNI_MY8H02bWQl9mJ_8yid-pjppUoLcyA&sc_status=6&hl=en&rpbu=http%3A%2F%2Fgoogle.com&rpqp=q&type=3&rs_tt=c&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF-8&format=r5&nocache=2871782575692976&num=0&output=afd_ads&domain_name=www.vanguardngr.com&v=3&bsl=10&pac=2&u_his=24&u_tz=60&dt=1782575692981&u_w=1366&u_h=768&biw=1351&bih=633&psw=1351&psh=7533&frm=0&uio=-&cont=autors-container-0&drt=0&jsid=csa&jsv=936599946&rurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vanguardngr.com%2F2026%2F06%2F2025-api-report-nass-least-trusted-institution-in-nigeria-overtakes-police%2F&referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.vanguardngr.com%2F&lle=1

“‘Trust Indicator’; the survey reported that 72% of Nigerians expressed little to no trust in the government of President Bola Tinubu, down 11-points from 83% in 2025. Similarly, 77% expressed little to no trust in the National Assembly, while 73% expressed little to no trust in the judiciary. Comparatively, 49% expressed little to no trust in religious leaders, while 55% expressed little to no trust in traditional leaders.

“‘Civic Participation & Patriotism’ Indicator; 71% of citizens are “Extremely or Somewhat Willing” to sacrifice or give up something of interest for the collective good of the nation; 77% are “Extremely or Somewhat Willing” to cooperate with fellow citizens from other ethnic groups to make Nigeria more united; and 73% are “Extremely or Somewhat Willing” to participate in the political process to make Nigeria a better place for all. Also, 89% expressed willingness to support inter-ethnic marriages, compared with 62% who supported inter-faith marriages.

“‘Polarization’ Indicator’; the data on polarization provided mixed reactions. On the one hand, 48% believe the country is much more divided today than it was four years ago, up 17-points from 31% in 2025. On the other hand, 20% believe the country is much more united today than it was four years ago. This statistic also increased by 10 points, from 10% of respondents who thought the country was more united in 2025. Political party affiliation (56%) was identified as the most significant factor leading to conflicts and divisions in communities, followed by ethnic (46%) and religious (44%) differences.

“‘Gender Equity’ Indicator; 69% of Nigerians agree that women should be allowed to lead in all aspects of society, especially in politics and corporate entities, and 62% agree that women should be given equal entitlement to family inheritances. Another 84% believe boys and girls should have equal access to education. Furthermore, 66% agree that women who marry into other states should be allowed to claim benefits in both their state of origin and their husband’s state. 60% say they would vote for a woman as President of Nigeria, 66% as Governor, 73% as Local Government Chairperson.

“‘Self-Worth and Future Expectation’ Indicator; Regarding self-worth, 45% of Nigerians feel “Extremely or Somewhat Dissatisfied” about their lives as Nigerians right now, compared to 41% who feel “Extremely or Somewhat Satisfied”; while 55% would consider relocating abroad with family members if offered the opportunity. Conversely, 28% said they would not be willing to relocate, up 7 points from 21% in 2025. Consequently, 61% of citizens believe that the future of the country would be much better than it is presently, up 5-points from 56% in 2025.”

Meanwhile, the 2026 Nigeria Social Cohesion Survey and the Nigeria Social Cohesion Index, said the overall results, with a score of 48.8%, indicate that Nigeria still falls below the average (50%) threshold for social cohesion. Particularly significant in the 2026 survey is the finding that, for the first time since the survey’s inception, the majority of respondents identified primarily as Nigerians rather than by ethnic, religious, or regional affiliations. This shift represents an important milestone in the country’s nation-building journey and points to a strengthening sense of shared national identity.

In its recommendation, the API said the government must now match citizens’ momentum with structural reforms; Nigeria requires a National Social Cohesion Commission focused on fostering inclusive governance, national identity, unity, peaceful coexistence, trust, civic participation, social justice and positive future expectations; and the majority Nigerian-first identification is the country’s most important social capital right now, and it must be protected and nurtured; and Social Cohesion desk in every Ministry, Department and Agency (MDA) of government, to ensure that development plans and public policies are inclusive and socially-cohesive.

VANGUARD
