Pandemonium erupted at Uti Junction in Effurun, in the Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State on Sunday after gunmen shot dead a policeman on a motorcycle and escaped with the service rifles on him.
Witnesses said the motorcycle rider was also injured in the incident, which occurred around 11am.
ALPHA NEWS NG gathered that the deceased policeman was carrying two rifles, one for himself and the other for a colleague who was not on duty at that moment.
Our correspondent learnt that passersby and onlookers scampered for safety during the incident.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing this report.
