Peseiro loses first game as Super Eagles coach as Mexico beat Nigeria 2-1

José Peseiro has lost his match as Super Eagles coach after CONCACAF‘s perennial champions Mexico beat Nigeria 2-1 in a friendly at the iconic AT&T Stadium in Dallas in the early hours of Sunday morning, May 29.

The Mexicans took the lead in the 12th minute after Santiago Gimenez found the net. In-form striker Cyriel Dessers scored his first goal for the Super Eagles in the 54th minute to draw level. But an own goal by William Troost-Ekong was conceded two minutes later to hand the hosts the victory.

For the match, Coach Peseiro invited local-based players to the camp, fielding Enyimba forward Victor Mbaoma, Katsina United midfielder Sani Faisal and Rivers United duo Rafiu Ishaq and Chiamaka Madu as substitutes in the second half.

After the game,  the Portuguese manager said: “They (NPFL players) came and they played very well. We can’t hide it, they had 2 players in front controlling our 5 at the back.”

The Super Eagles’ next match is another international friendly with Ecuador on Friday, June 3 at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey.
