Five persons have been confirmed dead and 41 others injured following a violent windstorm accompanied by a heavy downpour in Damaturu, the Yobe State capital.

Dr Mohammed Goje, the Executive Secretary of Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) gave the confirmation in a post via his personal Facebook page.

He said the search and rescue team of SEMA on 9th May 2022 responded to distress calls by good Samaritans and supported the evacuation of victims to Yobe State Specialist Hospital.

“A total of 41 victims are from six different communities/locations: Waziri Ibrahim Extension 1; Abbari Extension 2; Nayi-Nawa 3; Pompomari 4; House of Assembly Quarters, Gujba Road 5 and Maisandari 6 were evacuated and unfortunately five died (2 boys, 1 adult woman, 2 girls).

“All victims are receiving medical treatment free and already 23 were discharged”, he posted.

Checks by DAILY POST showed that residents of Damaturu are counting their losses following yesterday’s late evening sandstorm and heavy rainfall in the metropolis.
