Lagos Police Confirm Death of 23-Year-Old Law School Student in Suspected Suicide

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 23-year-old student of the Nigerian Law School, Faith Ajoke Alayande, following an incident at the institution’s hostel in Victoria Island, Lagos.

Alayande was reportedly found unresponsive within the hostel premises in the early hours of Friday, August 7, 2026.

According to information provided to the police, the incident was reported by the chief matron of the hostel at the Victoria Island Police Division at about 6:30 a.m.

Police spokesperson Abimbola Adebisi confirmed the incident, saying preliminary information indicated that the student had allegedly fallen from the rooftop of the four-storey hostel building.

Adebisi said a suicide note was reportedly discovered by the deceased’s hostel mate and a relative, who attempted to locate her before the fatal incident occurred.

The police subsequently visited the scene and evacuated the deceased’s remains to a morgue for preservation.

The command said an investigation has commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the student’s death.

Alayande recently graduated from university before proceeding to the Nigerian Law School this year.

A former university supervisor, Uchenna Marvin, also expressed shock over her death, describing the development as heartbreaking and recalling his interactions with her during her undergraduate research work.

The incident has drawn concern within the Nigerian Law School community as investigations continue into the circumstances that preceded the student’s death.

Authorities have not disclosed further details about the reported note or the circumstances surrounding the incident while the investigation remains ongoing.
