Collapsed building: RCCG members escape death during worship session in Lagos

Churchgoers Escape Death as Building Collapses in Lagos

Worshippers at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Liberty Parish, located at No. 5 Craig Street, Lagos, narrowly escaped death on Monday after concrete pillars from a nearby building under construction collapsed onto the church premises.

The incident occurred in the Shomolu area of Lagos State, specifically on Craig Street off Apata Road, during the decking phase of a two-storey building under construction.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

> “Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that one of two structures under construction had collapsed. Fortunately, no casualties were recorded as workers had reportedly evacuated the site before emergency responders arrived,” Oke-Osanyintolu stated.

He added that the collapse impacted the nearby RCCG Liberty Parish as falling concrete pillars struck the church building. Despite the proximity, all worshippers present at the time escaped unhurt, and no injuries were reported.

> “A thorough search confirmed that no individuals were trapped under the debris,” he said. “The affected area has been cordoned off to prevent further incidents, and residents have been advised to avoid the site for their safety.”

The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined, and further investigations are underway.

LASEMA confirmed that search and rescue operations have since been concluded.
