In a significant political shift, the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Umo Eno, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection was confirmed during an event held on Friday in Uyo, the state capital, marking a turning point in the political landscape of Akwa Ibom.
Governor Eno’s move comes just days after he hinted at the possibility of switching parties. Speaking during a recent town hall meeting in Ikot Abasi, he stated, “It is time to move,” signaling his intent to align the state with the APC-led federal government. He emphasized that the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders.
In a show of solidarity and to formally welcome him into the fold, several APC governors visited Akwa Ibom for the occasion. The delegation was led by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, and included:
Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State
Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State
Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State
Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State
Governor Eno’s defection is expected to reshape political dynamics in the South-South region and strengthen the APC’s influence in Akwa Ibom ahead of future elections.
