WAFCON 2022: Waldrum defends tactics in Super Falcons’ loss against Morocco

Super Falcons head coach, Randy Waldrum has defended his tactics after coming under intense criticism following his side’s defeat to host nation Morocco on Monday night in Rabat.

Waldrum’s side, instead of playing conservatively, pushed forward after scoring the game’s opening goal a minute after the hour mark despite playing with 10 players following Halimat Ayinde’s dismissal on 48 minutes.

The American also left forward Ifeoma Onumonu on the pitch for 120 minutes, despite the Gotham FC striker looking jaded after his side was further depleted following Rasheedat Ajibade’s dismissal on 70 minutes.

Waldrum was questioned about his tactical and substitution choices after the game.

“I’m not going to get into that,” the former college and NWSL coach gave a testy response to the media.

“I’ll say the subs we made were the right subs in the match and we couldn’t have asked more from the players.”

The Super Falcons will now shift attention to the bronze medal match against She-polopolo of Zambia on Friday.
