The Ebonyi North senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Mr Onyekachi Nwaebonyi on Monday, October 31, 2022, lamented the recent killings of one hundred innocent citizens of the state due to Ohaukwu and Agila boundary disputes.
Nwaebonyi made this submission at the media parley for candidates of various political parties for the 2023 general elections, organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Correspondents’ Chapel, at the NUJ press centre, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State.
In a well-articulated speech, Nwaebonyi said: “Ebonyi North Zone currently is facing a lot of challenges ranging from boundary disputes that have claimed many lives. You can see it from the axis of Ohaukwu; the Ohaukwu and Agila people (where) just a few months ago over 100 people were killed. We now move to Ebonyi Local government; the people of Ishieke Benue State are having the same problem.
In Izzi Local Government, we are having the same boundary problem with the Benue people. In Abakaliki Local Government, the same thing is happening between the local government and the people of Cross River.”
Blaming the problem on the non-responsiveness of politicians, he further stated: “I believe that the primary assignment of government at all levels is to protect lives and properties. So, if you are representing your people and they are being killed daily on a known problem that has a solution and you are unable to address it, then you have no business representing those people.”
Pledging to take a more responsive approach if elected in the coming election, he said: “I want to assure my zone that I will do all within my powers to make sure that these perennial problems are put to rest.”
